The Inn at Old Derby: Pet Boarding Kennel FAQs
Q: What is required for my pet to board at The Inn?
A: All guests of the Inn at Old Derby must be current on required vaccinations and have a negative intestinal parasite screen (fecal) within the past year. An intestinal parasite screen is required in order to maintain an environment free of intestinal parasites. Dogs must be up to date with their Rabies, Distemper and Bordatella (kennel cough) vaccinations and must be of sound temperament. Cats must be current on their Rabies and Distemper vaccinations. All overdue vaccinations must be administered at least ten days prior to boarding. We ask that your pet’s vaccination records be faxed to us at least one business day prior to boarding if you are not a client of our animal hospital. Our fax number is 781-741-5051.
Q: What time can I pick up/drop off my pet?
A: Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. or 5 p.m.– 7:45 p.m.
Friday 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. or 3 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.
Saturday 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.
Sunday 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. & 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. Please enter via the door at rear of building. Look for our blue awning "The Inn At Old Derby"
Christmas/Thanksgiving Day-no pick up
Memorial Day/4th of July/Labor Day & New Years Day- pick up times will be from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. Although the hospital is closed on Sundays, the Inn is open and fully staffed. Kennel attendants are on the premises and the doctors are only a call away. We have limited pick-up/drop-off hours to allow the staff to care for our guests.
Q: How do I book a reservation?
A: You may contact us by email or voicemail. You can dial (781) 749-2800 (781) 749-2800 and press #4 for boarding or you may email boarding@OldDerbyah.com. Voicemail and e-mail are checked at daily by the kennel staff.
Q: What should I bring with my pet?
A: It is always best to keep your pet on their regular diet. Abrupt changes in food commonly lead to diarrhea in many animals, especially when they are in a more stressful environment (i.e. away from home). Just be sure to bring enough for the entire stay of your pet. We also recommend sending one or two extra meals worth just in case your flight gets delayed. If you decide to use our house diet, Canines are fed Eukanuba adult dry small bites and for Felines we offer Iams adult dry. We provide plenty of comfortable bedding. If you choose to bring your own bedding or toys, it is best if they are washable. Also, please try to label your pet’s belongings to reduce the risk of articles becoming lost. We will do our best to see that all of your pet’s belongings are returned to you. Unfortunately, we cannot be responsible for any items lost or destroyed.
Q: I have never boarded my pet before, what should I expect?
A: The day starts at 6:30 a.m. and all the lights and TV’s are turned on. All of the dogs are taken out individually into the play yard to relieve themselves. After letting all of the dogs out the feeding and cleaning starts. A la carte services such as brushing sessions, cat playtime or nature walks begin at this time. Mid day walks occur between noon and 3 p.m. Once again, a la carte services such as playtime, baths and/or nail trims take place. Dinner is fed between 5 p.m. - 6 p.m. and last walks of the evening are given as close to 8 p.m. as possible. All of the lights and TV’s are turned off at the end of the night so that everyone can get a good night’s rest before starting all over again the next day.
Q: What makes boarding with The Inn at Old Derby different from a regular boarding facility?
A: At Old Derby we monitor your pet daily to see if they are eating well and having regular bowel movements. We have the ability to recognize and effectively deal with medical issues promptly, as we have our animal hospital right upstairs! We have chosen to limit the number of pets we board to give us adequate time to care for each pet. All kennels are kept clean with a special disinfectant and power wash machine to maintain a healthy environment.
Additionally, our building is equipped with the latest technology so that we may be prepared for any emergency. We have a burglar alarm to secure the building nightly; we have direct radio contact with the fire station so that they are notified immediately of any emergencies as well as a sprinkler system to automatically turn on in case of fire. Our building is climate controlled with both central air and heat to keep your pet comfortable no matter what the temperature! We are proud that our facility provides comfort, safety and cleanliness to keep your pets safe and happy.
Q: What is your cancellation policy?
A: We require a credit card number to hold a reservation. We accept Visa and Mastercard. If you cancel your reservation less than 48 hours in advance (72 hours in advance during holidays and school vacations), you will be charged for half of the original reservation.
Q: What if my pet is not a patient of your animal hospital? Can they still board?
A: Yes as we respect the existing relationship you and your pet may have with another veterinary clinic. If your pet is a patient elsewhere, up to date vaccination records and negative fecal sample results will need to be faxed to The Inn at Old Derby at least one business day before your boarding reservation. Q: What if my pet is on medication?
A: We are happy to administer medication to your pets. Please make sure all medication is clearly marked and there is enough for your pet’s stay. It is also important to let us know why your pet is taking these medications so we can monitor them during the course of their stay. There is a $5 daily charge for medication (injectables TBD).
Q: What if my pet becomes sick while staying at the Inn?
A: If your kennel attendant notices anything unusual with your pet, then they can bring them upstairs to our hospital to have a nurse or doctor exam them. We have doctors/nurses on premises Monday-Saturday and doctors are only a call away on Sundays.
Q: How will my dog smell when I come to pick him up?
A: At Old Derby, we are scrupulous at cleaning our kennels, and we use hospital grade disinfectants to keep them spotless and sanitized. However, in the closed quarters of a boarding kennel, a do’s natural scent may become more noticeable. We suggest a bath before pick up. Q: How is the kennel staffed?
A: Kennel staff is the building everyday from 6:30 a.m. until 8 p.m., including Sunday. Our building is equipped with an alarm and full fire sprinkler protection system.

Q: What is your facility like? May I take a tour?
A: We are happy and proud to take you on a tour of our facility during the hospital’s hours of operation! We ask that you come after 9 a.m., as we are busy walking, feeding and cleaning first thing in the morning. Our facility is heated/air-conditioned and has state of the art technology; alarms, direct radio contact with the fire department and sprinkler systems for any emergency needs.
Q: What’s included with my pets stay?
A: What’s included with your dogs stay are three times out a day to our play yard to relieve themselves, stretch their legs and to spend some quality time with the kennel attendants. These sessions are about 15 minutes long. We also have an additional list of a la carte services you can choose to customize your pets stay. (These services are an additional charge.)
Our feline boarders are housed in a kitty condominium during their stay. They interact with the attendants and are given individual "cuddle" time. You can also purchase time in our kitty playroom.
Q: So many dogs use the play yard, how do you keep it clean?
A: When the dogs go out in the play yard, their waste is scooped right away. Also the play yard is lined with pea stone, which allows us to sanitize it once a week. We keep the play yard raked in the fall and shovel paths for the small dogs in the winter.
Q: What if my dog needs to get out more often than usual?
A: The puppy package is designed for puppies/elderly dogs boarding at the Inn. Young puppies still in the stages of housebreaking may need to go outside for a potty break more than three times a day. The puppy package gives an additional three relief sessions for your little one. For an extra $15 a day, your puppy gets to go out every 2-3 hours. This will reduce the likelihood of a setback in housetraining. This package is also fitting for elderly pets who need more frequent trips outside.
Q: My dog doesn’t get along well with other dogs, how do you handle this?
A: The dogs boarding at the Inn do not interact with each other unless specifically requested.
Q: What should I bring for my exotic pet?
A: We ask that you bring hay, small pet food and vegetables as they can all go bad over time, so we do not keep them on hand. You will need to bring all the supplies needed for their stay, including hanging water bottles.
